HOW TO FOSTER A LOVE OF READING

The benefits of extensive reading are well documented - not only do students become better readers, but they improve vocabulary skills, writing competency, learner autonomy and even empathetic interpersonal skills. But how do you actually entice reluctant students to read? Does it matter whether students read digitally or on paper? How can a teacher monitor and assess “reading for pleasure”? DOROTHY ZEMACH taught ESL for over 18 years, in Asia, Africa and the US. She holds an MA in TESL from the School for International Training in Vermont, USA. Currently, she concentrates on writing, editing and publishing ELT materials and textbooks and conducts teacher training workshops, including the new TOEFL iBT Express for Express Publishing. Her areas of specialty and interest are teaching writing, teaching reading, academic English, testing and humour.
